I think the NHL is being a little bit fussy about Sean Avery's recent comments. For those who are not familiar with this issue here is the low-down. Sean Avery is a scrappy NHL player who currently earns his paycheck playing for the Dallas Stars franchise.

Avery said: "I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada ... I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight." It was a slight jab towards Calgary Flames' defender, Dion Phaneuf, who had recently started dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert. Personally, I thought it was really, really funny. What you have to understand is that a lot of these athletes talk to the same media personnel groupings throughout the course of a season. Sean Avery just got a little too familiar with the media. It was a mistake to confide in the public but then again this is a guy who relishes in the media spotlight. I do not see what the big deal is. If Dennis Rodman can marry himself and parade himself around town in an all white wedding gown with full makeup then what is the big deal? If Tom Brady can have a baby with one popular actress, break-up with her and then start dating a supermodel - before the baby was even born! - then what is the big deal? Geez, if the legend Wendel Clark could play with that 'stache of his for that long...what is the big deal? I mean, why is this worthy of a SUSPENSION? I think it is more of a personal issue than a hockey issue. Guys in the playgrounds and in hockey rinks around the country say a lot worse than this...Geez! Will players start getting fined if they say someone plays like a grandmother out there on the ice? Or will the league can Don Cherry?! I can bet that Cherry has said a lot worse in his day. This whole issue stinks. The Dallas Stars stink. It is not his fault that the Stars are at the bottom of their division. Sure, his comments and actions do not help rally the troops; they also do not reflect the sentiment of the team.
